mind-body problems [Mar. 13th, 2005|09:46 pm]
Mocha Club
What is Descartes' three-fold project?
What is his radical approach to mind?
What is his famous conclusion of the first step to finding mind?
what is God's role?
what difficulties does John Searle bring to the mind-body problem?

-explain the 4 views of the mind-body problem with attention to the chronology of the positions and how each one in the flow attempts to answer the difficulties of its predecessor. must explain what each view claims the mind is and include 1 or 2 problems for each view.
-choose 1 of the 4 views in the mind-body debate for your own position. explain the view in some detail and defend it by giving the positives of the view in terms of how it deals with important metaphysical issues and try to counter what you consider its biggest objection.

i have a 9 page paper i just wrote for metaphysics which i can email you...that may answer some of these questions. you say explain the four "views" of the mind-body problem. by views do you mean responses/answers to the problem. these questions such as "his (descartes) radical approach to the mind" are somewhat vague to me, since nearly everything descartes considers about the mind are pretty radical...if there's anyway you could email me the material you've been reading for class, i have plenty of time to read it and tell you what i think...but i'll still email you the paper i wrote, you can use anything you find helpful in it.
